CHPA President and CEO Scott Melville to Step Down After 16-Year Tenure

Melville's policy achievements included over-the-counter monograph reform, the restoration of HSA and FSA eligibility for over-the-counter medicines, and more.

Scott Melville, president and CEO of the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), will step down from his role early next year after a 16-year tenure.

Since becoming president and CEO in 2010, Melville led a period of significant growth and change for CHPA, where the association expanded from its longtime focus on over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to include dietary supplements, OTC medical devices, and the broader self-care industry. By bringing together this broader industry, he strengthened CHPA’s influence with policymakers, regulators, stakeholders, and consumers, and reinforced the association’s role as an industry leader grounded in science, CHPA reported.

“On behalf of the board and our members, I want to express our deep gratitude to Scott for his extraordinary leadership and unwavering commitment to CHPA and the self-care industry,” said Greg Bradley, chairman of Foundation Consumer Healthcare and chair of CHPA’s board of directors. “Scott has been a tireless advocate for our members, a trusted voice for policymakers, and a steady leader through periods of significant change. Thanks to his leadership, CHPA is stronger, more influential, and better positioned than ever to meet the opportunities and challenges ahead. We are confident that the association is well-prepared for its next chapter and will continue building on the strong foundation Scott has helped create.”

Melville led policy achievements including reforms to over-the-counter monographs and the restoration of Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) eligibility for OTC medicines. He also strengthened CHPA’s influence with regulators and policymakers and guided the industry through challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the association reported. He also revitalized the Health in Hand Foundation, CHPA’s educational nonprofit arm that provides guidance on the use of self-care products and other information for consumers.

“Serving as CHPA’s president and CEO for the past 16 years has been a tremendous privilege,” said Melville. “I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together on behalf of our members and the consumers who rely on self-care products every day. Working alongside CHPA’s talented staff, dedicated member companies, and industry leaders has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. As for what’s next, I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family while staying engaged in new ways: serving on board and committees, volunteering for organizations I care deeply about, and becoming more active in civic and political life.”

The board’s search process for Melville’s successor will be led by Bradley, along with chair-elect Phil McWaters, SVP and general manager for North America personal health care at Procter & Gamble, and CHPA’s executive committee.
